The Fishing Rod holds your Reel which in turn holds your line. A length of fishing line is threaded along a long, flexible rod or pole; one end terminates in a hook for catching the fish, while most of the rest of the line is wound around a reel at the base of the pole. The pulley-like arrangement of the reel allows the fish to be "reeled in" once caught.
A fish hook is a device for catching fish either by impaling them in the mouth or, more rarely, by snagging the body of the fish. Fish hooks have been employed for millennia by anglers to catch fresh and saltwater fish. Early hooks were made from the upper bills of eagles and from bones, shells, horns and thorns of plants (Parker 2002). In 2005, the fish hook was chosen by Forbes as one of the top twenty tools in the history of man.[2] Fish hooks are normally attached to some form of line or lure device which connects the caught fish to the angler. There is an enormous variety of fish hooks. Sizes, designs, shapes, and materials are all variable depending on the intended purpose of the hook. They are manufactured for a range of purposes from general fishing to extremely limited and specialized applications. Fish hooks are designed to hold various types of artificial, processed, dead or live baits (bait fishing); to act as the foundation for artificial representations of fish prey (fly fishing); or to be attached to or integrated into other devices that represent fish prey (lure fishing).
When you’re fishing great weather in the summer, many conditions allow for wet wading. This is prime. Who doesn’t want to be kept cool while they enjoy the beauty of a limestone creek or a favorite pond? That said, you should get a quality pair of waders for when the weather isn’t so nice or the water’s bigger than your bare gams can handle. Orvis’s Enduras (in either hip- or chest-length) are tough, light and comfortable. We recommend the stockingfoot version, in which case you’ll need…
Fishing rods consist of a slender pole made of strong but pliable materials. When combined with a fishing line and reel, the rod allows you to cast your line far into the water. Rods vary depending on what type of fishing you plan on doing and typically are classified by their action (how far it bends), strength (power), taper and responsiveness. Rods typically are made from graphite or fiberglass.
I’ve broken the checklist down into three sections “Essential Fly Fishing Gear List”, “General Fly Fishing Gear Checklist” and “Optional”.  In the Essential Fly Fishing Checklist, I’ve included some reasoning for packing it.  Some items will seem obvious, but maybe I can give you some tidbits to think about when filling your fly fishing vest backpack.

When fishing in bright daylight, it can sometimes be difficult to see where the fish are as the sun can create a glare on the water’s surface. Make sure to bring a good pair of sunglasses, like the Dive Shades 100% UV Polarized Sunglasses ($42.95), which feature polarized lenses that allow you to see beneath the surface better and pinpoint where the fish are. At the same time, polarized sunglasses are designed to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
The IEBIYO Fishing Pole for Kids is the perfect companion on long-distance trips. It’s also compact enough to keep in the car so that your child can cast a line whenever the opportunity arises. Measuring four feet, six inches in length, the rod features six adjustable sections that collapse to just 13.7 inches. The rod’s fiberglass, ABS and silicone construction keeps it lightweight, tipping the scales at 4.7 ounces.
Another piece of tackle called a swivel comes in handy if you are using bait (like a minnow) or a lure (like a spinner) that has a twisting or turning action that tends to get your line twisted. Tie a swivel between your bait and your line. This will allow the bait or lure to spin without getting the line all tangled up. Swivels are inexpensive and come in various sizes to match the hooks and lures you might be using.
HOOKS: When using live bait, smaller hooks are easier to get started in a fish’s mouth than bigger ones. Try size 6 hooks for panfish and crappie. Size 1 hooks work well for bass or catfish. Circle hooks are the ideal hooks for beginners. They won’t end up in a fish’s stomach; instead, they stick in the corner of the fish’s mouth, making for an easy hook removal. Plus, you don’t have to set the hook, just start reeling and the fish hooks itself.

The wide range of fishing shirts available at DICK'S Sporting Goods are designed specifically to maximize your performance with the rod and reel, and include features such as water repellency, salt and stain resistance, sun protection, moisture wicking fabric and vented sections to keep you cool in the sun. Other nice touches, such as convenient pockets and tool holders, will make these your go-to fishing shirts for every angling trip.
Fishing traps are culturally almost universal and seem to have been independently invented many times. There are essentially two types of trap, a permanent or semi-permanent structure placed in a river or tidal area and pot-traps that are baited to attract prey and periodically lifted. They might have the form of a fishing weir or a lobster trap. A typical trap can have a frame of thick steel wire in the shape of a heart, with chicken wire stretched around it. The mesh wraps around the frame and then tapers into the inside of the trap. When a fish swims inside through this opening, it cannot get out, as the chicken wire opening bends back into its original narrowness. In earlier times, traps were constructed of wood and fibre.
Sustenance is another important thing to remember on any fishing trip. There’s a reason most airlines serve small bags of peanuts on even the shortest of flights – it’s because most of us can’t go a couple of hours without getting hangry. Forgetting food and water on a fishing trip can be deadly. Below is a list of items to bring on a day trip (approximately 8 hours). Pack a small cooler bag with an ice pack and store it out of the sun in one of your kayak’s storage areas.

What You Should Look For:  Whether you’re big-game bonefishing in the Bahamas or trolling for crappie in Wisconsin, you’ll need a pair of fishing pliers to save you a whole lot of grief when unhooking catches and they also come in handy for securing hooks to tighten knots and to cut lines. Go for pliers that fit nicely in the palm of your hands with jaws suitable for both fresh and saltwater usage.
We get a lot of emails from anglers that are just getting into fly fishing asking us about the basic setup to get started in the sport. That's why we came up with this short list of essentials. Of course, there are lots of other elements to include as one progresses in fly fishing, but these are the basic tools that will help beginners catch their first fish on the fly.
Modern lines are made from artificial substances, including nylon, polyethylene, dacron and dyneema. The most common type is monofilament made of a single strand. Anglers often use monofilament because of its buoyant characteristics and its ability to stretch under load. Recently alternatives such as fluorocarbon, which is the least visible type, and braided fishing line, also known as 'superlines' because of their small diameter, minimal amount of stretch, and great strength relative to standard nylon monofilament lines.
