Important parameters of a fishing line are its breaking strength and its diameter (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). Factors that may determine what line an angler chooses for a given fishing environment include breaking strength, diameter, castability, buoyancy, stretch, color, knot strength, UV resistance, limpness, abrasion resistance, and visibility.
Check out a new downrigger or invest in an electric line puller to make the most of your adventure. Your boat is safe from damage thanks to Short-Stop technology and stainless-steel construction. And, since fishing is the top priority, many downriggers even emit positive ions to neutralize suspicion and create an appealing atmosphere to all the underwater species.
Ross takes the perfect approach to an affordable fly fishing reel: low maintenance, high performance. It’s finished aluminum alloy with a drag (that’s what provides pressure when line is being pulled out by you or a fish) that will last, providing a backup reel once you decide to move up the gear ladder. Again, it’s ubiquitous, pairing with any rod 2wt to 9wt, salt or freshwater.
Lots of people are turned off of fly fishing by a few glances at ugly price tags, but there’s plenty of accessibility to be had. A good many of us got around the up-front expenses buying an all-in-one package or kit, but while some nice ones do exist, there are also loads of “outfits” that package shoddy products; in our experience, those will simply add to your beginner’s frustrations.

A hook and worm alone are too light to sink very deeply. You’ll need to attach a weight or “sinker” to your fishing rig in order to compensate for that. I’ve lost plenty of sinkers on fishing expeditions so it’s good to have some extras on hand. Sinkers are traditionally made of lead, but some states are beginning to outlaw the use of lead sinkers for environmental reasons. It wouldn’t surprise me if the this trend continues. Other options for sinker materials are brass, tungsten, steel, and bismuth.

Knots are a fisherman’s nightmare and can be the end of a fishing trip. Most tangles and knots are caused by slack in the line while casting. The reduced length of a kids rod makes casting long distances impossible, but it also lessens the chances of line tangles for the same reason. The simple construction of children’s reels also lessens the chance for tangles and bad memories.
The swivel sinker is similar to the plain one, except that instead of loops, there are swivels on each end to attach the line. This is a decided improvement, as it prevents the line from twisting and tangling. In trolling, swivel sinkers are indispensable. The slide sinker, for bottom fishing, is a leaden tube which allows the line to slip through it, when the fish bites. This is an excellent arrangement, as the angler can feel the smallest bite, whereas in the other case the fish must first move the sinker before the angler feels him.
Mark’s Wild River trips will take you far beyond where the lodge jet boats operate. To get there we will load a high performance float plane with the correct type of raft and camp and fly fishing gear and the proper amount of supplies. We weigh each angler and piece of gear on electronic scales before loading the airplane. You can bring a maximum of fifty pounds #50. This includes your clothing, waders, boots, rods & reels, Gore-Tex rain jacket, spare tackle, camera etc. Experienced Alaska anglers generally have less than #35 pounds of gear.
What You Should Look For:  Whether you’re big-game bonefishing in the Bahamas or trolling for crappie in Wisconsin, you’ll need a pair of fishing pliers to save you a whole lot of grief when unhooking catches and they also come in handy for securing hooks to tighten knots and to cut lines. Go for pliers that fit nicely in the palm of your hands with jaws suitable for both fresh and saltwater usage.
If you plan to fish by the shore, small tackle boxes that can fit in your bag may be enough. When bank fishing, just bring one small tackle box as it would be easier to carry than having to drag around a large one. You’ll likely need to update your box with the appropriate fishing tackles for each of your trips in order to be able to bring a small box.

Remember that each rod is designed for a specific line weight, and line weight is also up to the angler's personal preference. (Check the fly rod section on our buying guide for more information about line weight.) Fly Line is what presents the fly during the cast. Lines come in a lot of options, from floating to sinking, and in different types of taper.
The coho fishing started strong and just continued to strengthen, peaking by the hour. There was a session with Jim Bean at "Porpoise Flats" that goes down as the BEST 90 minutes of fishing in my life bar none. Really large silvers on every cast, we spent most of the time doubled up. I'm fairly certain there were no two happier people on the planet at that moment. Bob Erickson

If you're not using live bait or cut bait, you'll want to use artificial bait or lures. Most artificial lures resemble the type of bait fish or other food, such as worms or shrimp, that the fish you're trying to catch normally eat. These artificial baits can be scented and have metal spoons attached to them or be painted in metal flake to reflect light in the water. Other types of bait include jigs and jig heads, spoons, flies and spinnerbaits, which you can attach artificial or real bait to, and attractants to make artificial lures smell lifelike.
