While catching a fish is often a case of matching wits—and great patience—a fisherman is at a distinct disadvantage without the right gear. eBay stocks the fishing supplies you need, like spinning rods, casting rods and more by St. Croix, Shimano and other top brands. There are plenty of saltwater and freshwater choices, so it doesn’t matter if you’re after salmon, trout or marlin.

I also like the open faced reel included as many kids rods use a push button reel instead. The open face tangles less frequently and it teaches the kid how to fish using the same technology as the person teaching them. Teaching a young child to cast with an open face reel can be rewarding because of how far the lure can be thrown. It even comes with line pre-spooled, making it dummy proof.
Man with lake troutThese fish inhabit the colder, deeper waters and sometimes aren’t as easily caught. But if fished correctly can provide quite a fight and a good dinner to boot. The trout are always willing to bite your line, but getting the baits in front of their face is often times the hardest part in fishing lake trout. During the spring when the water temperature is all the same throughout the lake, trout can be caught in depths as shallow as five feet. But that only lasts a few weeks after ice out. They look for water temperatures of about 46 or 48 degrees. So during the summer months, trout can be found in depths of anywhere between 50 and 100 feet. Trout hang out on steep structure where they can have access to the deep water. So focus on sharp drop-offs.
A sinker or plummet is a weight used when angling to force the lure or bait to sink more rapidly or to increase the distance that it may be cast. The ordinary plain sinker is traditionally made of lead. It can be practically any shape, and is often shaped round like a pipe-stem, with a swelling in the middle. However, the use of smaller lead based fishing sinkers has now been banned in the UK, Canada and some states in the USA,[4] since lead can cause toxic lead poisoning if ingested. There are loops of brass wire on either end of the sinker to attach the line. Weights can range from a quarter of an ounce for trout fishing up to a couple of pounds or more for sea bass and menhaden.
The fishing line is tied to the tip of the pole and is cast with a simple swaying motion. A quick pull from the base of the pole acts a fulcrum, lifting the fish out of the water. This may seem antiquated but there is a new phenomenon called Tenkara fishing that involves using a pole made from space age materials just like you would a bamboo stick.

Families who love to fish will know that there’s no greater pleasure than passing that passion down to the next generation. However, adult fishing rods are too heavy and unwieldy for little hands, and their complexity can lead to more frustration than fun. The best way to get children interested in fishing is to buy them their own, child-friendly rod. Kids’ fishing poles are typically short, light, inexpensive and simply designed. Look out for clever features such as no-tangle casting mechanisms and collapsible shafts; as well as budget-friendly packages that include a rod and tackle as well.

An Amazon’s Choice product with an exceptionally affordable price-tag, the Shakespeare Youth Fishing Kit is a great choice for active toddlers whose toys tend to need frequent replacing. At two feet, six inches in length, the rod is scaled down to suit even the smallest anglers, while kid-friendly design options include motifs from Frozen, Cars, Toy Story, Barbie, Spiderman and more. The rod includes a finger guard to encourage proper hand placement and an EVA foam handle for added comfort.
Similar to the Minnow, the Crosswater Youth Outfit was designed and tuned to meet the needs of a younger, beginner angler. However, this outfit is a little larger in size for the pre-teen/teen angler. The packaging and rod/reel case was designed to attract the teenage angler. The entire package is a legit fly angling package to a teen, but looks cool and “not like dad’s.”

Mark’s Wild River trips will take you far beyond where the lodge jet boats operate. To get there we will load a high performance float plane with the correct type of raft and camp and fly fishing gear and the proper amount of supplies. We weigh each angler and piece of gear on electronic scales before loading the airplane. You can bring a maximum of fifty pounds #50. This includes your clothing, waders, boots, rods & reels, Gore-Tex rain jacket, spare tackle, camera etc. Experienced Alaska anglers generally have less than #35 pounds of gear.
HOOKS: When using live bait, smaller hooks are easier to get started in a fish’s mouth than bigger ones. Try size 6 hooks for panfish and crappie. Size 1 hooks work well for bass or catfish. Circle hooks are the ideal hooks for beginners. They won’t end up in a fish’s stomach; instead, they stick in the corner of the fish’s mouth, making for an easy hook removal. Plus, you don’t have to set the hook, just start reeling and the fish hooks itself.

Fishing traps are culturally almost universal and seem to have been independently invented many times. There are essentially two types of trap, a permanent or semi-permanent structure placed in a river or tidal area and pot-traps that are baited to attract prey and periodically lifted. They might have the form of a fishing weir or a lobster trap. A typical trap can have a frame of thick steel wire in the shape of a heart, with chicken wire stretched around it. The mesh wraps around the frame and then tapers into the inside of the trap. When a fish swims inside through this opening, it cannot get out, as the chicken wire opening bends back into its original narrowness. In earlier times, traps were constructed of wood and fibre.

Fishing lures are basically artificial baits that are designed to mimic real fish in order to get the attention of a predator. Fishers have these stored in their tackle box in case they’ve run out of live bait or simply prefer to use plastic, non-moving ones. For some, the variety of lures makes it easier for them to hunt specific types of fish and allows them to be successful in different weather and water conditions.
